Meter Relocation and Replacement Project

For safety and other reasons, ATCO Gas must upgrade aging meters, pipelines and facilities to maintain a high level of safety, service and reliability. ATCO Gas residential and small commercial customers with meters that are located indoors with pipes that enter below grade will have the meters relocated to a safe location on the outside of the residence or business.

ATCO Gas will schedule an appointment at the customer’s convenience. An ATCO Gas representative will assess the property to find the best possible location for the meter to minimize disturbance to the property. A crew will then come on the scheduled day to complete the work. All restoration will be completed by ATCO Gas to the customer’s satisfaction and at no direct expense to the customer.

The Meter Relocation and Replacement Project has been in effect since 2002 and, by the beginning of 2010, 99% of affected customers had successfully had their meters moved to the outside.

Most indoor below grade entry gas meters were installed prior to the mid-1970s. Relocating residential and small commercial gas meters outdoors will also improve access to meters to ensure an accurate bill.

The cost to complete the meter move was included in ATCO Gas delivery charges paid by all customers. This project is approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission.
